Andrew Thompson is the founding Pastor of Grassroots Church.
He is husband to Nikki and father to Laney and Levi. He is passionate about teaching people the beautiful redemptive story of Christianity and the incredible hope of resurrection. He longs to see the church reclaim its identity as a movement of people and a force for good in the neighborhood. He hopes to teach others (while he also learns himself) how to make following Jesus a part of the everyday rhythms of life. He loves to discuss all kinds of questions of faith over fresh-roasted coffee. In his spare time, he likes to do CrossFit, play Spikeball, wrestle with his kids, and date his beautiful wife.
He is a native Texan and has called Pearland “home” since 2005. He has served in full-time ministry in the local church since graduating from the University of Texas at Austin in 2002 with a B.S. in Communication Studies. He earned his Master of Divinity from Southern Methodist University in 2009. And he gives credit to God and to his amazing family and faithful friends for journeying with him and being a part of Grassroots Church.

Board of Elders/Directors:
Grassroots Church is led by a board of directors (or “elders” to use Biblical language). The board consists of the pastor(s) and other qualified persons who have demonstrated faithful leadership and who have been approved by the church.
Randy Barnett is a retired Houston Police Department Sergeant. He likes to travel, to spend time with grandchildren, and to film the many events and activities of his 4 children and 9 grandchildren. He fondly remembers how God grew his faith through leadership in the church when he was ordained as a deacon by Gulf Meadows Baptist Church in Houston. He looks forward to the opportunity for ministry in up-close and personal ways through Grassroots Church.
Royce Thompson is a CPA and Certified Financial Planner Professional. He enjoys helping people achieve their financial dreams and goals, walking around God’s creation, and having spiritual conversations with others about how the Lord guides us, loves us, and comforts us. He remembers how God grew his faith through a life-threatening illness. He saw the love of others as they prayed for him and he witnessed the Lord carry him through it all. He is excited about being led by the Lord to offer the Good News of salvation and everlasting life to all in our neighborhoods through Grassroots Church.
Dennis Gafford retired as a Lieutenant with the Houston Police Department in 2011 after 32+ years. He now works as an investigator with Darling International / Griffin Industries. His primary interests are his family and church. He is married to Michelle (we call her Michi) and lives in Friendswood. Along with Michelle, his son Marcus (and wife Chrystal), and his daughter Misty (her husband Kevin) are delights to his life, as are his six beautiful grandchildren: Makayla, Alani, Anberlyn, Ryder, Coraline, and Stella. He is involved with the Worship Team at Sagemont Church and over the past year he and Michi have become part of the Worship Team in the newly formed Sagemont en Español, the church’s Spanish-speaking congregation. This ministry has led him to a significant faith journey, including attending a 6-week Intensive Immersion Spanish Course in Costa Rica. Since Michi is already a fluent Spanish-speaker, she is an excellent tutor as well. Dennis is excited about the opportunity to support Grassroots Church because, he says, “I believe in the mission of the church within the community. I am usually careful to say that I don’t believe in the Pastor, but I believe in God’s hand on the Pastor. In this case, it is both. I believe strongly in Andrew, and I believe strongly that God’s hand is on him for such a time as this.”
John Hatfield is an artist, musician, storyteller, and the founder of Torch & Arrow. He is also 1/2 of the Hymnistry podcast. He currently serves on staff at Clear Lake United Methodist Church as director of Contemporary Worship & Media.
Josh Barnett is the Worship Minister for Grassroots Church.
