We’ve Started a New Non-Profit

Grassroots Church is excited to announce that we’ve started a brand new, 501(c)(3) non-profit called Grassroots Marriages, Inc.

Grassroots Marriages is a grassroots movement of greater marriages. Through a series of assignments aimed at helping communication, relieving financial stress, and improving intimacy, nominated couples challenge their marriage to be better.

You can learn more about the specifics of the challenge here.

Why Marriage?

We believe the marriage of a man and woman is a beautiful gift from God that gives us a beautiful picture of our relationship with God. Marriage is God’s metaphor of his love and devotion to us.

In Ephesians chapter 5, Paul gives believers instructions on marriage. These instructions include loving each other so much that you give up your life for one another. We submit to the will of our spouse.

And that kind of loving relationship is the kind of relationship God wants to have with us.  Jesus loved us so much that he laid down his live for us. We must submit to the will of God for our lives.  Paul writes in verse 32, “This is a great mystery, but it is an illustration of the way Christ and the church are one” (NLT).

What’s Unique About Grassroots Marriages?

This new non-profit was born out of both frustration and desire:  frustration with seeing marriages fall apart without warning; desire to see marriages strengthened.

There are many great ministries and organizations devoted to strengthening marriages. There are helpful programs, enriching retreats, and enlightening books.  But those resources are only helpful to the married couple that chooses them.

Grassroots Marriages is unique because it incentives couples to choose to help their marriage before it hurts. Instead of waiting for a couple to decide to come to us, we reach out to them with an invitation to receive a free vacation for participating in our Marriage Challenge.

The Marriage Challenge is an extensive process that helps the husband and wife address many common pitfalls in marriage:  communication, intimacy, finances, addiction, etc. We partner with existing organizations and use credible books and programs that have a track-record of strengthening marriages. Upon satisfactory completion of the challenge, the couple is rewarded not only with a weekend getaway, but also with a stronger marriage.

Why a separate non-profit instead of just starting a ministry of the church?

One important thing to note is that Grassroots Marriages, Inc. is a “non-religious” Community Development Corporation.  And though it was started by our church, and its board members are members of our church, it was started as its own independent organization and is not formally affiliated with our church.

This non-religious affiliation enables us to reach out to non-religious couples to accept the challenge and to reach out to non-religious companies and businesses for donations.

Who can participate?

Any legally married husband and wife are eligible to take the challenge, however, the couple must be nominated by a couple who has completed the challenge themselves or by a donor. The married couple must also be approved by the Grassroots Marriages board.

In other words, you can’t sign yourself up!

One way that this non-profit becomes a “grassroots movement” is by couples who complete the challenge nominating two more couples to go through the challenge. Couples are asked to nominate one couple whom they believe “really needs” this marriage help. And couples are asked to nominate one couple whom they believe “never would need marriage help. And we don’t tell those couples which category they fall into!

We ask for this second nomination for two reasons:

  1. We’ve all been surprised to find out that that “perfect couple” has gotten divorced.
  2. When couples are nominated for the challenge, they need to know that it is not shameful to be nominated. Couples of all kinds are nominated. It may in fact be a compliment to their marriage.

How can I get involved?

There are many ways you can help Grassroots Marriages, Inc. get off the ground.

  1. Awareness – Spread the word.
  2. Donate at grassrootsmarriages.causevox.com
    • Give a special gift
    • Become a monthly marriage investor by giving monthly
  3. Plant a seed and start the growth of a new movement
    • For every $10,000 gift you can start a new movement of greater marriages by nominating the husband and wife of your choice.

Thank you for your generous support!
